With the new year and Christmas just around the corner, the last Community Street Tree planting for this calendar year was held last week at Chelmer.
2008 has been the most successful year for community plantings, to date since the projects beginning in 2002.
We would like to thank all of the volunteers who put away their valuable time on a Saturday to come and help us shade the areas of Brisbane. From local residents, to hard working community groups and our regulars from Manly, Belmont, Acacia Ridge, Camp Hill & Jindalee (you know who you are!).
Over the course of the year we have hosted 30 Community Planting Events in 16 suburbs and the following are some statistics we have collected along the way;
- 6846 Trees have been planted in Brisbane.
- 3667 existing trees have been formatively pruned.
- 199 dead/diseased/undesirable trees have been removed.
- 1340 cumulative volunteers have attended the events
- Approx. 5500 sausages have been consumed (240 kg!)
- Approx 6000+ free trees were given away.
In 5-10 years time the trees planted are predicted to provide (at least) 2m2 of shade. So in 2008 alone, and in only 16 suburbs, we will have all created approx 13,700 square metres of shade for the future generations! That’s almost 3 football fields of shade!
Once again, thanks to all of the volunteers and residents who have leant a hand, it wouldn’t have been as successful without you!
With the postponement of the Murarrie Juvenile Maintenance event (scheduled 20/12/2008) our final planting for this year is this weekend at Chelmer (13th December 2008).
To celebrate the festive season, we will be having a lucky door prize to one lucky family - a beautiful Norfolk Island Pine tree to have as a christmas tree, with decorations and all.
We look forward to seeing our regulars at this planting, your support throughout the year was phenominal, making 2008 the most successful year for community plantings to date!
